Hill poppies

My annual hike up the hill to sketch and admire the green grasses and local poppies before they disappear. I can actually see the hill turn more orange as the day progresses and they open more. The 16×8 inch frame gives the watercolor an arts and crafts period touch.

Donner Summit migration of California Tortoiseshell butterflies this August. Millions of these butterflies were flying west over summit. I hiked up into Castle Peak meadow and sat off trail sketching them as they rested along the damp trail. Early in the morning they open their wings making it easier to sketch on location.
