I like to test myself to see how close I can match the paint to the trunk of a tree. Nailed it !
While painting a view of trees, all these leaves filtered down in a gentle breeze. I picked up a few, to paint. I put them on tiny canvas and started by tracing their outlines. Fast studies of colors of the moment.
Over the years painting this grove I like to experiment with different size canvas with backgrounds that may or not be actually there. This first one is with the pines behind the trees. The weather is warm, no smoke or wind. So I keep coming back.
Every morning a Red Shoulder hawk would perch on these coastal oaks checking out its territory. I was fortunate to actually line up the tree trunks in my painting with the view when I stood back to take the photo.
