I started a year ago on four 8 inch panels of aspen leaves I collected while out painting landscapes. I put the leaves on my easel for reference. While painting a view of trees, all these leaves filtered down in a gentle breeze. I picked up a few, to paint. I put them on tiny canvas and started by tracing their outlines. Fast studies of colors of the moment.
I went out just before sunset to catch the light on the shack. Here is an example of the movement of light in one hour. A painter has to decide what to highlight or they are just painting the light moving out of the frame.
The old shack is still standing on Hwy 267 near Brockway Summit. I have painted every year. This time I decided paint the view from what might have been the front of the shack. It was 39% out so I chose a small panel to paint a quick view of aspen and snow before the afternoon sun melted it away.
I could then finish the painting with the highlights that still exited in the trees. Sometimes they are gone before a painter gets to the end of a painting.
The mosaic light between these aspen trunks is what I saw to paint.
My show of tree paintings is still up at the Truckee airport until October 19th 2020. This grove of aspen always gives me inspiration to paint.
