A stick and a tree

I took a class from Friends of the Sierra Nevada Field Campus featuring Tree Portraiture with Laurie Wigham.

She taught how to sketch a juniper tree using ink and sticks

I went to Donner Summit and picked one of my favorite trees to try this method out after the class.

It was exciting to try out a new method and think this was used before pencils.
I added some watercolor to finish.
As you can see from photos above this tree has weathered and shaped over many years, including branches chopped off. I am guessing because of the view of Donner Lake from this spot, many campfires benefited from its branches.
