A few years ago I painted a juniper with a view of Donner Lake behind it. Later while researching early painters in the state of California, I came across Mary Ann North. She was a Victorian painter who in the nineteenth century painted around the world. A British artist, around the year of 1875 she traveled by train to the summit and painted two sketches.. I am pretty sure we painted the same tree. Her collection of work is stored in the beautiful Mary Ann North Gallery located in Kew Gardens near London.
Out with my easel one day I ran into Bill Oudegeest who decided to write an article in the Donner Summit Historical Society newsletter, about both of us painting the same tree.
